Description	Dr. Ernest Johnson developed the electromyogram, or EMG, cart in the 1950s. Johnson assembled several machines and used them to evaluate disorders of muscle and nerve. Component parts are a Grass amplifier, a stimulator with specially-designed timer, a Hewlett-Packard oscilloscope to display wave forms, a Polaroid camera to take photographs, an audio amplifier, and loudspeaker. Many of the first-ever studies on nerve conduction velocities in premature infants were done on this equipment. The cart measures 20.5" x 51" x 37" (52.07 x 129.54 x 93.98 cm) and weighs 195.5 pounds (88.67 kg). Dr. Ernest Johnson was born in Newark, New Jersey and moved to Ohio as a boy. He started school at The Ohio State University but was then drafted in January 1942 and eventually went overseas for 30 months in the Pacific. Discharged as first lieutenant in July 1946, Johnson enrolled at Ohio State under the G.I. Bill. He graduated with honors from the medical school in June 1952. Johnson served as a faculty member at The Ohio State University from 1955-2001. He was the first chair of the OSU Department of Physical Medicine, a position he held from 1963 to 1989. Johnson is internationally known for his advocacy for the rights of people with disabilities and his medical contributions to rehabilitation.
