Description	These four letters to Vadae G. Meekison of Napoleon, Ohio, were written by Elizabeth Hauser of the Ohio Woman Suffrage Association (OWSA). The first letter Hauser suggests that Meekison contact Pauline Steinem, vice-president of OWSA and the grandmother of feminist Gloria Steinem, to speak in Henry County. In another letter, Hauser suggests that Meekison should establish a permanent Woman Suffrage Association in Napoleon. The third letter, written after the defeat of the Ohio suffrage amendment in 1912, vows that the campaign form women's suffrage will continue. In the final letter, Hauser asks for an update on the campaign for women's suffrage. The letters are one to two pages each and measure 8.5" x 11" (21.59 x 27.94 cm). Journalist and suffragist Elizabeth J. Hauser served as Harriet Taylor Upton's personal secretary and was one of the founders of the National American Women's Suffrage Association (NAWSA). Born in Girard, Ohio, Hauser (1873-1958), attended a suffrage meeting in Salem, Ohio at the age of 16 and began campaigning for suffrage. After passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920, Hauser devoted herself to work with the League of Women Voters, serving as director. Meekison (1884-1981) was born in West Virginia and lived in Kansas, Michigan, and Indiana before moving to Ohio with her husband George. She received her law degree from Valparaiso (Indiana) University and was admitted to the Indiana Bar in 1907. When she began her law practice in Napoleon in 1926, she became one of the first women to practice law in Henry County. She was a critical figure in Ohio's women's suffrage movement because of her work as a speaker, petitioner, and local organizer. Her papers include personal correspondence and form letters from Ohio Suffrage Association President Harriet Taylor Upton and other officers, describing plans for pro-suffrage campaign strategy and lecture tours in Henry County and northwest Ohio.
