which
was
printed
by the
Western
Biographical
Publishing
Company
,
shows
Piatt
as a
mature
man
. The
second
portrait
is
entitled
"
Donn
Piatt
at
Fifteen
After
Portrait
by
[Godfrey]
Frankenstein
,
1834.
"
Both
portraits
measure
5
by
8
inches
(12.7
by
20.32
cm)
. They are
taken
from
Donn
Piatt
: His
Work
and His
Ways
by
Charles
Grant
Miller
,
which
was
published
in
1893
.
Donn
Piatt
(1819-1891)
was
born
in
Cincinnati
but
moved
to
Mac-o-Cheek
, the
family
home
,
when
he was
eight
years
old
. He was
educated
in the
public
schools
of
Urbana
and
Bellfontaine
and
taught
at the
Athenauem
(now
Xavier
University)
in
Cincinnati
. He
studied
law
and
served
as
judge
in the
Hamilton
County
Court
of
Common
Pleas
and
secretary
of the
American
legation
in
Paris
. He
served
in the
13th
Ohio
Volunteer
Infantry
(O.V.I.)
during
the
Civil
War
,
eventually
rising
to the
rank
of
lieutenant
colonel
.
After
the
war
, he
went
to
Washington
,
D.C
. as a
correspondent
for the
Cincinnati
Commercial
, and
later
started
his
own
magazine
, The
Capital
.
Piatt
frequently
attacked
corruption
in its
pages
. He was
indicted
for his
violent
disapproval
of the
electoral
commission
that
resolved
the
election
of
1878
, but the
charges
were
later
dropped
.
