Description	These three articles document a demonstration of the Edison phonograph in Columbus, Ohio. Opera singer Madame Marie Rappold and violinist Albert Walsh performed accompanied only by Edison's phonograph, demonstrating the sound quality of the machine. The performance was held at Memorial Hall, and according to the Ohio State Journal article, "the invited audience that nearly filled the hall often had occasion to be thrilled by this invocation of modern magic." In the 1910s, many people were skeptical of Edison's claim that his phonograph could record sounds and play them back. To convince them, Edison sent musicians such as Marie Rappold and Marie de Kyzer around the country with the phonograph. They performed onstage with the machine to illustrate how closely it recreated their sound.

Full Text	(Columbus, Ohio.) May 4, 1916 PRIMA DONNA SINGS DUETS WITH HERSELF Phonograph Record and Voice Blend Perfectly in Songs. An unique and highly interesting entertainment was given Wednesday night before an audience which al¬ most filled Memorial Hall by Mme. Marie Rappold, soprano of the Met¬ ropolitan opera, who sang in unison with her own voice on the phono¬ graph, assisted by Mr. Albert Walsh, violinist who played in unison and duet with the records of violin solos by Albert Spalding and Carl Flesch. It was an exhibition to show to what degree of perfection in re-cre¬ ating musical tone Thomas A. Edison has reached in what is commercially known as the Edison disc record. It was given under the auspices of the Morehouse-Martens Company.
