Description	This is an appliqued quilt with red and green floral pattern on white cotton. It is signed "LTD June 23, 1859" in ink on one of the border urns. The initial "D" is for Dennen, a family from Cadiz, Ohio. Red and green on white appliqued quilts were very popular in Ohio between 1840 and 1860, although they were made until the end of the nineteenth century. Unlike pieced quilts where scraps of fabrics were used, these quilts required a special purchase of yardage so all the colors would match. The cut out colors were sewn on top of the white ground, often in floral motifs. Due to the added expense and sewing required, many of these pre-Civil War appliqued quilts were regarded as special and have been handed down through generations. They were made by women, often for special occasions such as weddings.
