Description	Gertrude Sutton created this crazy quilt during the 1880s. It measures 52" by 59" (132.08 by 149.86 cm) and was made by sewing together various pieces of fabric and cloth. Some of the materials used in the quilt include a "Class of 84" ribbon and a presidential campaign ribbon for James A. Garfield from 1880. Also included in the quilt are 1884 presidential campaign ribbons for the Grover Cleveland and T.A. Hendricks on the Democratic ticket and James G. Blaine and Logan from the Republican ticket. Crazy quilts began to appear in the late 1870s. Some scholars believe that they were influenced by Japanese art. The Centennial Exposition of 1876 included a section on Japanese art and many were fascinated by the asymmetrical quality of many pieces. Also the "crazed" finish of the ceramics, which provided an overall "crazed" or broken appearance to the glaze drew much attention.
