Description	This 9" x 7.3" (22.3 cm x 18.5 cm) scorebook of the Croghan Base Ball Club of Fremont, Ohio, documents the team members, games played, number of runs, hits and outs, and beginning and ending times of the games. The 63-page scorebook shows the interaction between community teams in Northeast Ohio, as the Croghans played teams from Huron, Port Clinton, Clyde, Bellevue, Toledo, and surrounding towns. The scorebook was owned by team member Birchard A. Hayes, son of President Rutherford B. Hayes. Base ball began in the United States in the 1840s and 1850s in New York. During the Civil War, Union soldiers introduced the game to other soldiers from remote regions of the country. When the war ended, base ball clubs grew across the U.S. The National League of Professional Baseball formed in 1876 to formalize professional baseball, but amateur baseball remained popular.
