Croghan
Day
is
a
celebration
to
commemorate
the
Battle
of
Fort
Stephenson
,
which
took
place
in
Fremont
,
Ohio
in
1813
, and was a
major
United
States
victory
in the
War
of
1812
. The
event
was
named
after
the
fort's
commander
,
Major
George
Croghan
. The
first
Croghan
Day
was
observed
on
August
2
,
1839
,
26
years
after
the
event
. At the
time
of this
first
celebration
,
George
Croghan
was
invited
to
Fremont
to
attend
the
festivities
.
Croghan
, then a
colonel
, had to

citing
his
responsibilities
as the

New
Orleans
.
Despite
Croghan's
absence

first
Croghan
Day
celebration
saw
Fremont's
population
of
3,000
turn
out
for an
ox
roast
on the
Sandusky
River
bank
. The
second
Croghan
Day
celebration
did
not
occur
until
1852
.
Since
1906
, the
Colonel
George
Croghan
Chapter
of the
Daughters
of the
American
Revolution
has
sponsored
Croghan
Day
each
August
2nd
.
