Description	Upon his death in 1890, Cleveland real estate investor Horace Kelley (1819-1890) willed a large portion of his estate to build an art museum and school. His residence at 1001 Willson Ave. (now East 55th St.) near Carnegie Ave. became the home of the Cleveland School of Art in 1892. This 6.5" x 4.5" (16.51 x 11.43 cm) photograph shows the building after it had been converted to the Cleveland School of Art. Another 6.5" x 4.5" (16.51 cm x 11.43 cm) photograph depicts Professor Frederick C. Gottwald's (1858-1941) outdoor life class. Professor Gottwald's drawing class, which was held in the attic of the Kelley mansion, is shown in a 9.5 x 8.25 photograph. One 4.75" x 3.5" (12.07 cm x 8.9 cm) photograph and one 4.25" x 5.25" (10.8 cm x 13.3 cm) photograph depict unidentified groups of students on the grounds of the Kelley building. Founded in 1882 as the Western Reserve School of Design for Women, the Cleveland Institute of Art is one of the oldest independent art colleges in Ohio. The School focused on vocational aspects art, and many of its students where involved in the art pottery and glass industries. Enrollment quickly grew to include not only young women in need of vocational training, but also daughters of the city's elite who were seeking to improve their skills in the arts. The demand for art training was so large that the school began accepting men as well as women. The school was briefly associated with Western Reserve University in the late nineteenth century, but differing perspectives on the art education made for a stormy affiliation. The university's emphasis on "art for art's sake" conflicted with the school's early focus utility in design, and after three years, the school reaffirmed its charter as an independent institution.
