Founded
in
1882
as the
Western
Reserve
School
of
Design
for
Women
, the
Cleveland
Institute
of
Art
is
one
of the
oldest
independent
art
colleges
in
Ohio
. The
school
initially
focused
on
vocational
aspects
of
art
, and
many
of its
students
were
involved
in the
art
pottery
and
glass
industries
.
Enrollment
quickly
grew
to
include
not
only
young
women
in
need
of
vocational
training
, but also
daughters
of the
city's
elite
who
were
seeking
to
improve
their
skills
in the
arts
. The
demand
for
art
training
was
so
large
that the
school
also
began
accepting
men
. The
school
was
briefly
associated
with
Western
Reserve
University
in the
late
nineteenth
century
, but
differing
perspectives
on the
art
education
made
for a
stormy
affiliation
.
After
three
years
, the
school
reaffirmed
its
charter
as an
independent
institution
.
