Description	This ladle was given to Arvine Wales of Massillon, Ohio by an unidentified American Indian woman. Arvine Wales was sent by Thomas Rotch, his employer, to warn American Indians that a group of soldiers returning home from the War of 1812 might attack them. Grateful for the warning, a American Indian woman gave him this 9" x 5" (22.86 x 12.7 cm) ladle, which is carved with a lizard, a symbol of her clan. In the accompanying written account, Arvine Wales mentions General Hull and his troops returning from the War of 1812 and describes the incident in which he was given the ladle. The account is one page and measures 4.25" x 4.75" (10.8 x 12.07 cm). Arvine Wales brought 408 Merino sheep to Ohio in 1811 for Thomas and Charity Rotch. In 1812, Rotch founded Kendal, now called Massillon. Arvine Wales purchased the Rotches' home at Spring Hill after the deaths of Thomas and Charity Rotch.

Full Text	After the surrender of Genl [l" superscript] Hull in the war of 1812 the returning soldiers of his army were exasperated against the indians and slaughtered all that came in their way. An indian family was in camp near the [partially erased] where Bridgeport now stands My father Arvine Wales hearing of the appr= =oach of scattering body of soldiers hastened to the camp of the indians where acquaintance he had previously made an [sic] informed them of their danger. They hurriedly broke camp and as the left the squaw gave their friend this ladle. It will be observed the "totem" of the tribe a lizard is carved on the handle A.C.W.
