Description	Charles H. H. Burch (1881-1961) posed for this photograph in his Spanish American War uniform in 1898. He was too young to be a combatant, so Burch served as a bugle boy for the 7th Ohio Volunteer Infantry (O.V.I.), Company K. It measures 4 by 5.4 inches (10.16 by 13.71 cm). The photograph is mounted on a card inscribed with "World's Fair Photo View Co." and a Washington, D.C. address. The reverse side of the card is also included here. Burch was born in Hebron, where he attended school through the 8th grade. He joined the 7th O.V.I. to be with his father Lieutenant Colonel Hamlin D. Burch, a Civil War veteran and owner of the H. D. Burch Cash Store, a general store in Hebron. The 7th O.V.I. was stationed at Camp Alger in Virginia and Camp Meade in Pennsylvania, but did not leave the United States. After the war, Charles Burch settled in Coshocton with his wife, with whom he had four children. The Spanish American War broke out in April 1898 and ended in July of the same year, during the presidency of Ohioan William McKinley. The United States and Spain battled over control of Cuba, urged on by newspapers such as the New York Journal and the New York World. The so-called "yellow press" presented events from a slanted perspective, favoring Cuban independence from Spain and arousing public sentiment in support of American intervention. As a result of the war, the United States gained control not only of Cuba, but also Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines.
