Description	The obituary of Charles W. Follis appeared in the Wooster Daily News on April 5, 1910. Follis, nicknamed the "Black Cyclone" helped organize the first Wooster High School football team in Wooster, Ohio in 1899. At that time, a captain was equivalent to a playing coach. As captain, Follis led his team to eight straight victories, in which the Wooster team scored a total of 112 points and their opponents failed to score a single point. After graduating from high school, Follis played semi-pro baseball and football. In 1904, he became the first African-American to sign a professional football contract when he signed on with the Shelby Athletic Club, which had been organized by Frank C. Schieffer. In the final game of the 1906 season, Follis suffered a serious injury that terminated his professional football career. He later moved to Cleveland and worked as a catcher for the Cuban Giants, a semi-pro colored team, as well as other area baseball teams. On April 5, 1910, following a Cuban Giants game, Follis collapsed into a coma and died. He was 31 years old.
