This
collection
of
architectural
drawings
documents
the
beginnings
of the
Cincinnati
Zoo
.
Included
here are
drawings
of the
monkey
house
,
entrance
lodge
,
eagle
and
owl
building
,
elk
house
,
bear
pits
,
carnivoria
,
club
house
,
squirrel
cage
, and
aviary
.
Each
drawing
measures
11
by
14
inches
(27.9
by
35.56
cm)
. A
variety
of
architectural
elements
were
incorporated
into the
design
of the
zoo
buildings
,
including
Gothic
,
Middle
Eastern
, and
rustic
elements
, to
name
only
a
few
. These
foreign
elements
were to
represent
the
native
buildings
from the
area
in
which
the
animal
originated
. A
few
of the
buildings
are
still
standing
today
. The
Monkey
House
now
serves
as the
Reptile
House
and
is
the
oldest
zoo
building
in
North
America
.
One
of the
zoo's
seven
original
Japanese-inspired
aviaries
is
now
used
as the
Passenger
Pigeon
monument
. In
1875
, the
Cincinnati
Zoo
opened
for
public
display
. The
zoo
began
earlier
in the
decade
through
the
efforts
of
Andrew
Erkenbrecher
, a
German
immigrant
.
Influenced
by
European
zoos
,
Erkenbrecher
and the
other
trustees
planned
to
place
their
animals
in
naturalistic
,
more
rural
settings
than the
menageries
of
New
York
or
Chicago
.
Building
on the
German
tradition
of
music
in the
zoo
,
concerts
were
held
near
the
restaurant
.
Architect
James
W
.
McLaughlin
(1834-1923)
was
active
in
Cincinnati
between
1857
and
1912
.
Among
his
other
designs
are the
Art
Museum
and
Art
Academy
, the
former
Public
Library
, and the
Shillito
Company
building
,
which
some
architectural
historians
believe
influenced
the
development
of the
Chicago
"
skyscraper.
"
