Clarence
Childs
(1881-1960)
was
born
in
Wooster
,
Ohio
, but
moved
to
Fremont
after
the
death
of his
mother
in
1893
. He
played
on the
high
school
football
team
in
1896
and
served
as the
captain
of the
Fremont
Football
Club
in
1897
.
Before
finishing
high
school
,
Childs
joined
the
army
and was
mustered
in to the
Sixth
Ohio
Volunteer
Infantry
(O.V.I.)
on
April
25
,
1898
as a
musician
.
While
in
Europe
with an
All-American
concert
band
at the
Paris
Exposition
, he
heard
an
all
slide-reed
instrument
band
. On his
return
,
Childs
organized
a
similar
band
known
as the "
C.C.C
Slides.
" The
band
received
national
attention
. In
1906
,
Childs
attended
Kenyon
College
,
where
he
played
on the
football
and
track
teams
and was a
member
of
both
the
glee
and
mandolin
clubs
. He
transferred
to
Yale
in his
senior
year
and
entered
law
school
. In
1913
Childs
was a
member
of the
United
States
Olympic
track
and
field
team
. He
placed
third
at the
games
in
Stockholm
,
Sweden
.
After
returning
to
Fremont
to
marry
Zella
Sherrard
,
Childs
became
the
athletic
director
at
Wooster
College
and in
1914
he
coached
football
and
track
at
Indiana
University
. His
assistant
coach
at
Indiana
was
Jim
Thorpe
, a
friend
from the
Olympic
games
.
Childs
later
served
in
World
War
I
and was
promoted
to
major
. He
later
served
in the
Harding
administration
.
