pamphlet

rules
and
regulations
of
Albert
Academy
in
Sierra
Leone
.
According
to the
dormitory
rules
,
every
boy
must
be
present
in his
room
when
the
rising
bell
rung
at
5:30
a.m
. The
penalty
for
breaking
this
rule
was the
loss
of
one
meal
.
Boys
were
expected
to be in their
own
rooms
by
9
p.m
. with the
lights
out
and
silence
. If not, the
penalty
was a
mark
of
indecorum
and
four
extra
lashes
. In
addition
to
daily
sanitary
inspections
,
other
inspections
were
conducted
every
Tuesday
,
Thursday
, and
Saturday
.
Female
visitors
were
only
allowed
on
Saturday
from
3
to
5
in the
afternoon
. In
addition
loud
talking
,
running
,
jumping
,
whistling
, and
dancing
were
forbidden
. The
pamphlet
measures
4.3
" by
6.3
"
(11
by
16.3
cm)
. The
Albert
Academy
was
located
in
Freetown
,
Sierra
Leone
,
West
Africa
. The
school's
paramount
objective
was to
prepare
young
men
to be
missionaries
by
instructing
them in
religion
,
literature
, and
industrial
work
. The
school
opened
in
temporary
quarters
in
1904
and
moved
to its
permanent
location
in
1908
.
Five
students
made
up
the
first
class
, but the
school
had
educated
more
than
620
students
by
1918
and
33
had
completed
their
course
of
studies
.
Reverend
Lloyd
B
.
Mignerey
(1896-1988)
was
born
in
Mowrystown
,
Ohio
. He
graduated
from
Otterbein
College
in
1917
, then
enlisted
in the
U
.
S
.
Army
.
During
World
War
I
he
served
in the
Medical
Corps
and
drove
an
ambulance
in
France
.
Following
the
war
he
studied
at the
Sorbonne
in
Paris
briefly
before
returning
to the
United
States
. He
served
as the
field
secretary
for the
Anti-Saloon
League
of
America
until
the
18th
amendment
,
which
prohibited
the
sale
of
alcohol
, was
passed
. He
married
Ruth
Phillips
on
September
11
,
1921
. In
December
of the
same
year
they
departed
for
missionary
work
in
Sierra
Leone
,
where
they
served
until
1924
. In
Sierra
Leona
he
became
acting
principal
of
Albert
Academy
and
became
an
avid
supporter
of the
movement
for
one
universal
language
,
Esperanto
. In
1926
, he was
ordained
into the
ministry
; he
served
in
United
Brethren
churches
in
Lancaster
,
Chillicothe
, and
Jackson
.
Mignerey
obtained
his
private
pilot's
license
in
1940
and
enlisted
in the
Air
Force
as a "
Sky
Pilot
"
chaplain
in
1942
. He
remained
in
military
service
throughout
World
War
II
and the
Korean
conflict
.
When
he
returned
to
civilian
life
in
1955
he
became
editor
for the
Temperance
Education
Foundation
in
Westerville
,
Ohio
until
he
retired
in
1964
.
