mowing
machines
manufactured
by
Warder
,
Mitchell
&
Co
. of
Springfield
,
Ohio
. The
brochure
claims
that the
company
offers
the "
most
reliable
harvester
in
America
" and
includes
information
on the
features
of the
machine
and how to
use
it
.
It
measures
6
"
x
8.75
"
(15.24
x
20.96
cm)
. In the
early
1850s
,
William
N
.
Whiteley
invented
the
first
prototype
of what would
become
the
Champion
Combined
Reaper
and
Mower
with
Sweep
Rake
. This
product
became
the
foundation
of an
agricultural
empire
and
Springfield
became
known
as the "
Champion
City.
" By the
1870s
the
phenomenal
success
of the
Champion
Reaper
and
Mower
had
ushered
in a
golden
age
of
manufacturing
in
Springfield
. The
demand
for this
product
was
so
large
that the
firm
of
Whiteley
,
Fassler
&
Kelly
moved
their
operations
to the
East
Street
Shops
,
one
of the
largest
manufacturing
operations
in the
world
at that
time
,
which
covered
54
acres
and
employed
2,000
workers
. The
production
of the
Champion
line
was
eventually
taken
over
by the
firm
of
Warder
,
Bushnell
&
Glessner
,
which
was
one
of the
five
firms
that
formed
the
International
Harvester
Company
in
1902
.
