Description	This scoop was used to build and maintain the Miami, Wabash and Erie Canals in Paulding County. The scoop measures 24" by 40" (60.96 by 101.6 cm) and is made of oak reinforced with hand-forged iron. It was pulled by a mule and used to excavate land for the Miami and Erie and Wabash and Erie Canals. The scoop was also used to maintain the canals. The banks of the canal eroded over time and combined with silt deposits to clog the channel. The canals were periodically cleared using a scoop. Construction on the Miami and Erie Canal began in 1825 and continued until 1845. Workers were paid thirty cents a day to dig the canal and many suffered from disease. When finished, the canal extended from Toledo to Cincinnati Ohio. The entire canal system was 301.49 miles long and played a major role in the development of cities along the canal. By the time the canal was completed in 1845, however, railroads began to replace the four- to five-mile-an-hour canal boats and by 1905 the canal was only used sporadically.
