Description	These two documents relate to the Charity School of Kendal, one of Ohio's first vocational schools. The first is an example of a bond that was issued in 1850 by Arvine Wales, treasurer, confirming the loan of $834.10 to Adam Hildenbrand. It is one page and measures 8" x 11.25" (20.32 x 28.58 cm). The second document is an insurance policy between Stark County Mutual Insurance Company and Charity School, Kendal issued on October 21, 1854 for a period of six years. The cost of the policy was $350.12; the Charity School brick building was insured for losses from fire for $4,666.67. The adjoining barn on the property was insured for $533.33, all to be paid within three months to the insured. Attached extracts from by-laws of the Stark County Mutual Insurance Company provide details regarding categories of goods that the insurance company considered more likely to be hazardous and therefore more flammable and at risk for fire damage. Lastly extracts describing the act of incorporation of the insurance company were provided for the benefit of the insured. It is three pages and measures 10.5" x 15.5" (26.67 x 39.37 cm). The Charity School at Kendal operated from 1829 to 1906, educating more than 500 children. The school was located on present-day State Street in Massillon, at the southeast corner of the present Ninth Street North East. The Rotch-Wales Collection comprises several thousand items, including Quaker and abolitionist materials, household remedies and recipes, weather reports and machinery plans, and personal letters of Thomas and Charity Rotch and their family. It contains personal and business correspondence, diaries, documents, accounts, ledgers, and daybooks. A large portion of the collection consists of the personal and business correspondence, documents, and business papers of Arvine Wales I (1785-1854), who accompanied Rotch from Hartford to Ohio in 1811, worked for him, and carried on Rotch's business interests after his death. The papers of his son, Arvine C. Wales (1827-1882), a lawyer and civic leader in Massillon, are also part of the collection.
