Description	Two postcards of former slave Charles A. Garlick are shown here. The first shows him seated with a book in his hands. The second photograph is a portrait of Garlick with a violin. The photographs measure 3.5" x 5.5" (8.89 x 13.97 cm). Charles A. Garlick (1827-1912) was an Ashtabula County, Ohio resident for fifty years. He was born a slave in Virginia in 1827, and escaped to Ohio in 1843 via the Underground Railroad. Garlick moved to Ohio and western Pennsylvania after gaining his freedom. He was educated at Oberlin College, served in the Union Army during the Civil War, and lived with the family of Congressman Joshua R. Giddings in Jefferson, Ohio after his return from the war.
