vs
.
Shehy
Court
Documents
Subject
Ohio Government
Immigration and Ethnic Heritage
Judicial proceedings
Place
Youngstown (Ohio)
Mahoning County (Ohio)
Trumbull County (Ohio)
Northwest Territory
Description
These
documents
relate
to a
lawsuit
that
James
Alexander
brought
against
Daniel
Shehy
of
Youngstown
,
which
was
part
of
Trumbull
County
at the
time
, for "
Monies
,
Goods
,
Wares
&
merchandise
" in the
amount
of
$178.50
. The
court
ruled
in
favor
of
Alexander
.
Shehy
was
assessed
$234.03
,
including
court
costs
.
Land
belonging
to
Shehy
was
sold
at
sheriff's
sale
to
pay
the
debt
. This
case
provides
insight
into the
legal
system
of the
Northwest
Territory
before
Ohio
became
a
state
in
1803
.
Included
here are the
court
records
,
list
of
attorney's
fees
,
sheriff's
writ
, and
promissory
notes
. The
fifteen
pages
range
in
size
from

6.75
inches
(19.05
by
17.15
cm)
to
12.5
by

inches
(31.75

cm)
.
Daniel
Shehy
(1759-1834)
was
born
in
Dublin
,
Ireland
. He
studied
for the
priesthood
but
became
involved
in
anti-British
activities
, and
immigrated
to the
American
colonies
after
several
of his
relatives
were
executed
. He
served
in the
Continental
Army
during
the
Revolution
. In
1796
,
Shehy
joined
John
Young
and his
party
on a
trip
to the
Connecticut
Western
Reserve
to
inspect
lands
that
Young
wished
to
purchase
from the
Connecticut
Land
Company
.
Young
informally
agreed
to
sell
Shehy
1,000
acres
before
he
took
possession
of the
land
, but
another
buyer
made
a
better
offer
.
Young
accepted
the
second
offer
, and an
angry
Shehy
threatened
him and was
arrested
.
Shehy
spent
the
night
in
jail
and was
fined
twenty-five
dollars
. The
two
men
appear
to have
reconciled
because
Shehy
later
named
one
of his
sons
for
John
Young
.
It
is
believed
that
Shehy
built
the
first
log
cabin
in the
area
. He
seems
to have been a
leader
of the
immigrant
community
and
spoke
out
during
a
disputed
election
when
residents
attempted
to have
foreign-born
voters
disqualified
.
Shehy
died
in
1834
.
