Description	This 8.5" x 6.75" (21.5 cm x 17 cm) volume includes the constitution, membership list, and minutes of the Champaign County Farmers' Institute. In addition, programs from the annual institutes are inserted into the 273-page book. Selections from the book presented here include the constitution, 1890 minutes and program, and 1900 minutes and program. The Champaign County Farmers' Institute organized in December 1890 to promote the teaching of modern methods of agriculture: farming, stock raising, fruit culture, and business methods connected to the industry. The institute also served a social function as one of the few activities for rural farmers in Champaign County. The organization represents the response of many farmers to post-Civil War industrialization and urbanization of America. By 1890, when the Champaign County group was formed, these organizations focused on education and community rather than political action.
