Description	The Akron Public Library was housed in the Everett Building, shown in these two 8" x 10" (20.3 x 25.4 cm) photographs, between 1898 and 1904. In 1869, the state legislature gave Ohio cities the right to establish, by taxation, free public libraries. In 1874, Akron's first free public library was opened in the Masonic Temple Building at the corner of Howard and Mill Streets. By 1890, the library had outgrown this building, and by 1898 had moved to the new Everett Building at the northeast corner of Main and Market Streets. It was described as "second to none for beauty, light, convenience, and necessary furnishing" featured gas as well as electric lights, and had complete fire protection. In less than two years, it became apparent that these new larger quarters were inadequate to house the library's growing collection and to serve Akron's booming population. In 1904, the Akron Public Library dedicated its new building, funded in large part by Andrew Carnegie and designed by architect Frank O. Weary. Construction of the new library is visible in the first photograph.
