Description	Elizabeth B. Custer, wife of General George A. Custer, wrote Boots and Saddles, or Life with General Custer after her husband's death at the Battle of Little Bighorn. The appendix, which is digitized here, includes 40 pages of transcripts of the general's letters written in the field and sent back to his wife. In the letters, he remarks on the territory of the West. During the Yellowstone Campaign of 1873, he wrote, "No artist--not even a Church or a Bierstadt--could fairly represent the wonderful country we passed over, while each step of our progress was like each successive shifting of the kaleidoscope, presenting to our wondering gaze views which almost appalled us by their sublimity." In one 1873 letter, he writes for half a page describing the luxury of having fresh onions to eat. The final letter, dated June 22, 1876, was written at the "Mouth of the Rosebud" and describes Custer's plans for the attack that would eventually result in his death a few days later. The book is 312 pages and measures 6.5" x 8" (16.51 x 20.32 cm). George Armstrong Custer (1839-1876) was born in New Rumley, Harrison County, Ohio. He graduated last in his class at West Point in 1861, but distinguished himself during the Civil War at the battles of Bull Run, Gettysburg, and Chancellorsville. Wounded at Culpepper Court House, Custer was made a general during the Civil War. After the war, he was appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the Seventh United States Cavalry and sent to the western states. When the Sioux Campaign began in 1876, Custer and the Seventh United States Cavalry attacked the Lakota and Cheyenne forces along the Bighorn River. Custer and his 210 men were killed in the attack.
