Description	Two photographs from 1938 are of Betty Brown, the first African American graduate of Notre Dame College. The first measures 4" x 2.75" (10.16 x 6.99cm), and the second measures 5" x 7" (12.70 x 17.78 cm). Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Marie Elizabeth "Betty" Brown graduated from Notre Dame College in 1938 with majors in art and music. She gave frequent piano recitals as well as impromptu sessions, and at one time planned a career as a concert pianist. Instead, she pursued post-graduate studies at the Cleveland Institute of Art and at the Art Students League of New York. She studied art history at the University of Chicago and returned to Notre Dame College in the late-1940s to teach art and art history. Betty Brown Syed later moved to Canada, where she is known for her oil portraiture, ceramic sculpture, and copper enameling. The Sisters of Notre Dame established Notre Dame College in 1922 in Cleveland, Ohio. Founded as a private, Catholic, liberal arts college for women, Notre Dame College opened on September 18, 1922 on the campus of Notre Dame Academy on Ansel Road. As the college grew, it became necessary to build a separate campus. Land east of Cleveland in South Euclid was prepared for the new college site, and the first building opened in September 1928. In 1978, the Weekend College (WECO), an outgrowth of Lifelong Learning, was established for women older than age 25 who wished to pursue degrees in four years on alternating weekends. In 1992, the M. Ed. degree was designed for "master teachers." In 2001, Notre Dame opened attendance to men. The college's motto is "changing the world, one student at a time."
