Gas masks
Military air pilots
Goggles
Place
Dayton (Ohio)
Montgomery County (Ohio)
Description
American
pilot
Lieutenant
Stephen
W
.
Thompson
of
Dayton
,
Ohio
used
this
early
gas
mask
on
February
5
,
1918
,
when
he
became
the
first
man
to
down
an
enemy
aircraft
while
serving
the
United
States
military
in
uniform
.
Like
other
gas
masks
of its
time
, this
mask
contains
goggles
and an
air
re-breather
that
prevented
deadly
poison
gas
from
affecting
the
wearer's
eyes
and
lungs
. The
fear
of
death
by
gas
attack
was a
very
real
concern
for
World
War
I
aviators
.
Gas
masks
became
standard
gear
for
frontline
pilots
due
to the
low
altitudes
at
which
combat
occurred
and the
possibility
of
being
shot
down
on a
battlefield
. The
gas
mask
measures
approximately
8
"
x
6
"
x
32
"
(20.32
x
15.24
x
81.28
cm)
.
Thompson
was
invited
to
join
a
French
bombing
squadron
on
February
5
,
1918
when
the
usual
observer
became
ill
. As a
representative
of the
U
.
S
.
Army
Expeditionary
Forces
he
accepted
the
invitation
and
flew
in the
observer's
place
on the
French
Breguet
bomber
aircraft
.
During
the
mission
two
German
Albatross
fighters
attacked
the
bomber
.
Thompson
returned
fire
and
shot
one
down
over
the
village
of
Saarbrucken
. He was not
officially
credited
with this
air
victory
until
1967
because
of his
unofficial
status
on the
mission
.
Date of Original
