Two
images
depict
opera
houses
in
Wooster
,
Ohio
. The
first
image
measures
3.25
" by
3.5
"
(8.26
by
9
cm)
and
depicts
the
City
Opera
House
,
built
in
1887
. The
auditorium
could
seat
more
than
900
people
.
It
was "
perfect
acoustically
" and had a
sloping
floor
.
Some
musical
comedies
of the
time
included
"The
Isle
of
Spice
" "The
Red
Mill
" and "The
Merry
Widow.
"
Famous
musical
groups
that
performed
there
included
Sousa's
band
,
Gilmore's
band
, and
Nellie
Melba
. The
City
Opera
House
was
opened
to the
public
between
two
and
six
nights
a
week
. On
occasion
,
it
was
opened
on
Sunday
for
religious
services
. The
second
image
measures

and
shows
the
Quinby
Opera
House
,
which
was
located
on the
corner
of
North
Buckeye
and
Larwill
streets
. The
opening
show
on
February
1
,
1877
was
Shakespeare's
comedy
"As
You
Like
It.
" The
comedy
was
presented
by
Effie
Ellsler's
Dramatic
Company
from the
Euclid
Avenue
Opera
House
in
Cleveland
,
Ohio
. The
Quinby
Opera
House
could
seat
1,000
people
. The "
Gambler's
Pathway
"
(later
a
smash
hit
in
New
York)
and "
Romeo
and
Juliet
"
(presented
by
Miss
Jane
Coombs
and her
company
from
New
York)
were a
few
shows
that were of
great
success
. The
opera
house
was
torn
down
about
1900
. This

is
part
