Description	These two 8" x 6" (20.32 x 15.24 cm) photographs show the funeral procession of President William McKinley through Canton, Ohio. The horse-drawn hearse that carried the president's body was made by the Riddle Coach and Hearse Company of Ravenna, Ohio. Riddle Coach and Hearse Company was well known for manufacturing high-quality carriages and hearses. Originally established as the Clark Carriage Company, the business was purchased by Charles Merts and Henry W. Riddle in 1861. Merts carved the wood and made the vehicles, while Riddle was the salesman. In 1891, Riddle bought out Merts and the company became known as Riddle Coach and Hearse. A horse-drawn Riddle hearse was used for the funeral of President William McKinley, and a motorized Riddle hearse was used for the funeral of President Warren G. Harding. When the company switched to manufacturing motorized hearses, the name was changed to Riddle Manufacturing Company. William McKinley, the twenty-fifth president of the United States, was born in Niles, Ohio in 1843. He enlisted in the army at the outbreak of the Civil War and, after being mustered out, studied law and opened a law office in Canton, Ohio. McKinley served in the U.S. Congress for 14 years, and became president in 1893, largely due to the influence of Marcus Hanna, boss of the Cleveland political machine. McKinley was most noted for his foreign policy and the conduct of the Spanish-American War in 1898. It was during McKinley's administration that the U.S. acquired its first overseas possessions in the Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico. He was re-elected in 1900, but was assassinated by anarchist Leon Czolgosz in 1901. His running mate, Theodore Roosevelt, then became president.
