Description	William McKinley wrote this letter to his wife Ida on March 22, 1880 on House of Representatives stationary. It is addressed "My precious love" and he tells Ida about dining with President Rutherford B. Hayes. The one-page letter measures 6.7" by 11.3" (17 by 29 cm). McKinley (1843-1901), Ohio's sixth president and twenty-fifth president of the United States, was born in Niles, Ohio. He enlisted in the army at the outbreak of the Civil War and, after being mustered out, studied law and opened a law office in Canton, Ohio. McKinley served in Congress for 14 years, and became president in 1897, largely due to the influence of Marcus Hanna, boss of the Cleveland political machine. McKinley was most noted for his foreign policy and the conduct of the Spanish-American War in 1898. It was during McKinley's administration that the United States acquired its first overseas possessions in the Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico. He was re-elected in 1900, but was assassinated by anarchist Leon Czolgosz in 1901. His running mate, Theodore Roosevelt, then became president. Ohio adopted as its state flower McKinley's favorite red carnation in his memory.

Full Text	[written on letterhead of House of Representatives, Washington, D.C.] Mar 22, 1880. My precious love, I received your dear letter the morning & was delighted to hear from you. You don't say how you are. I went last night to the Presidents to dinner Mr & Mrs Andrews were there the latter send you much love. Some of Mrs. Hayes relatives were there. it was a good dinner there were many inquiries about you. this is a highly beautiful morning. I wish you were here. God bless & Keep you. I get your letters regularly now. James expects to go to N. T. tomorrow Evening he sends love [illegible] W m[superscript] McKinley
