Description
These
two
photographs
show
the
construction
of
oil
tanks
in
Wood
County
,
Ohio
during
the
oil
boom
of the
late
nineteenth
century
. The
first
photograph
,
which
measures
8
"
x
6.25
"
(20.32
x
15.88
cm)
,
shows
a
group
of
men
building
the
interior
of the
oil
tank
,
which
stored
up
to
30,000
barrels
of
oil
. The
second
8.75
"
x
6.75
"
(22.23
x
17.15
cm)
photograph
shows
a
group
of
men
in
front
of
another
tank
in
Bartlesville
,
Ohio
. The
tank
is
still
under
construction
.
Oil
was
first
discovered
in
Wood
County
on
December
13
,
1886
on a
farm
just
outside
of
North
Baltimore
. The
second
discovery
in
February
1887
in
Henry
Township
began
the
oil
boom
. By
1896
,
5,500
wells
were in
operation
, and by
1900
the
county
had
approximately
14,000
wells
and
1000
derricks
.
Unprepared
for
such
rapid
development
, the
county
had
no
adequate
provisions
for
receiving
and
storing
the
oil
,
creating
dozens
of
small
oil
boomtowns
. This
oil
boom
brought
a
significant
amount
of
growth
and
affluence
to the
Wood
County
,
especially
to
Bowling
Green
, the
county
seat
. The
population
of
Wood
County
increased
from
17,886
in
1860
to
51,555
by the
turn
of the
century
.
Around
1910
, the
production
quality
and
quantity
of the
oil
began
to
decline
. By
1917
,
northwest
Ohio
dropped
out
of the
top
four
oil
producing
areas
in the
nation
.
