[corresponds to page 1 of William Heald Letter to Thomas Rotch Regarding Captain James Riley]
Beloved Friend 6th Mo 7th 1818
Being but in a poor state of health I have a
freedom to inform thee that a letter has been recd from
brother John from Philadelphia wherein he states that he
and T Wickersham were in health and that himself was
well recruited after a fatiguing journey he further states
that he has had several interviews with Capt James Riley
of whom he entertains a favourable opinion, that he
proposed traveling to the Westward (perhaps to mount vernon)
to look for a place of residence for himself and family, that
he gave him a letter for me and desired him to call on
me if it was convenient he also gave him thy name
and several others on whome he might call, and as I
have had an opportunity of reading his narrative I had
made the observations contained in this sheet some time
since if he should call on thee thou mayest communi-
cate to him such of my Ideas as thou mayest think
proper, the two quotations are in his own words my
observations were taken down as they offered and ought
to have been corrected but I do not feel industry enough
to transcribe them and as it is on a subject in which
I feel interested and which I am willing to aid according
to ability I am willing to send them to thee in this imperfect
state believing that thy better judgment and friendship
for me wilnot expose anything that would be better concealed
my family & John are in usual health father and mother
both complaining I remain thy frd Wm Heald
