Description	These two documents relate to the British Royal Air Force Distinguished Flying Cross awarded to Captain William C. Lambert for his considerable prowess as a combat pilot in France during World War I. The first item list recipients of military honors issued July 16, 1918 and measures 8.2" by 13.5" (20.8 by 34 cm). The second item is the certificate documenting the award given to William Lambert on July 17, 1918. It measures 6" by 8.5" (15 by 22 cm). Lambert (1894-1982), of Ironton, Ohio, was the second-ranking American ace of the war. He recorded 21.5 air-to-air victories, 4.5 fewer than "Ace of Aces" Eddie Rickenbacker. On August 4, 1914 Britain declared war on Germany. Canada, as part of the British Empire, also went to war. American pilots who wanted to join the fight prior to America's entry into the war in April 1917 enlisted in the Royal Flying Corps. Some, like Lambert, later transferred to the British Royal Air Force, and eventually joined the United States Air Service. Lambert was a member of the Royal Air Force 24th squadron in France, flying S.E. 5a fighters. After the war, Lambert joined the U. S. Air Service and served with the Army Air Forces in World War II. He retired in 1954 as a lieutenant colonel in the U. S. Air Force.
