Description	William Henry Fouse (1868-1944) was born in a log cabin a mile outside of Westerville, Ohio. At the time of his birth, his parents has been emancipated from slavery for three years. Fouse became the first African American to graduate from Otterbein College in 1893. The first African American student at Otterbein, William Hannibal Thomas, attended the preparatory school in 1859 but only stayed for one term. This photograph measures 8.7" by 9.3" (22.2 by 23.5 cm). Fouse was an educator; during his life he taught, served as a principal, and became president of the Kentucky National Educational Association. In 1937 Otterbein awarded him an honorary Doctor of Pedagogy (Education) degree. In his acceptance, Fouse indicated that his alma mater was "largely responsible for helping me to set the sails that have all to do in determining the way I have done." His obituary praised his leadership in working quietly to improve race relations.
