Description	William Howard Taft visited Sandusky, Ohio during his 1908 presidential campaign to speak at the Ohio Soldier's and Sailor's Home (now the Ohio Veterans Home) and to visit with his friend Edward H. Marsh, a resident of Sandusky. The first three photographs show Taft at the Soldier's and Sailor's Home, while the fourth photograph of Taft and his wife, Helen Herron Taft, was taken on the front porch of Marsh house. The photographs measure between 3" x 5" (7.62 x 12.7 cm) and 8" x 10" (20.32 x 25.4 cm). Edward H. Marsh (1851-1921) was born in Cincinnati, and succeeded his father as head of Marsh & Company, a plaster manufacturing business founded in 1843. He moved to Sandusky in the early 1870s. His son, Edward Lea Marsh, worked for the company (U. S. Gypsum) that bought the family business. William Howard Taft (1857-1930), the twenty-seventh president of the United States, accepted his party's nomination for the presidency from the front lawn of his half-brother's home, now the Taft Museum of Art. Prior to that time, William Howard was a lawyer in his native Cincinnati and in 1904 had been appointed secretary of war by President Theodore Roosevelt. Following his presidency, Taft became chief justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, the only president to achieve this distinction.
