, to the
Supreme
Court
. The
appointment
caused
a
controversy
because
both
Hughes
and
Taft
were
affiliated
with the
Republican
Party
.
Taft
later
became
the
only
former
president
to
serve
as
chief
justice
of the
Supreme
Court
. The
cartoons
are
one
page
each
and

accepted
his
party's
nomination
for the
presidency
from the
front
lawn
of his
half-brother's
home
,
now
the
Taft
Museum
of
Art
.
Prior
to that
time
,
William
Howard
was a
lawyer
in his
native
Cincinnati
and in
1904
had been
appointed
secretary
of
war
by
President
Theodore
Roosevelt
.
Following
his
presidency
,
Taft
become
chief
justice
of the
Supreme
Court
of the
United
States
, the
only
president
to
achieve
this
distinction
.
James
Albert
Wales
(1852-1886)
was
born
in
Clyde
,
Ohio
. He
worked
as a
wood
engraver
and
cartoonist
in
Toledo
and
Cleveland
before
moving
to
New
York
to
work
for
Frank
Leslie's
Illustrated
Newspaper
and
Puck
.
Wales
was a
founder
of
Judge
, a
satirical
magazine
that
competed
with
Puck
and
eventually
exceeded
it
in
popularity
.
Judge
,
published
between
the
early
1880s
to the
late
1930s
,
used
black-and-white
as
well
as
color
cartoons
to
comment
on
national
events
.
Wales
died
of a
heart
attack
at the
age
of
35
and was
buried
near
his
home
in
Clyde
.
