Description	This two-page letter was written by Walter G. Smith almost one month after the women of Hillsboro began their temperance crusade. Inspired by temperance lecturer Dr. Dio Lewis, women began protesting outside of saloons and drug stores that sold liquor. Smith reports that the temperance excitement is still the rage, but does not think it will last much longer. He names three saloons that have closed and refers to a friend who refused to sign the temperance pledge. The letter measures 8 by 10.5 inches (20.96 by 26.67 cm). The temperance crusade continued in Highland County and eventually spread to all parts of the state. In some areas the women were successful in closing saloons, but they also faced mobs and arrest in others. In November 1874, the national Woman's Christian Temperance Union was formed in Cleveland.

Will Practice in Highland and Adjoining Counties Hillsborough, O., Jany 20 1874 Dear Lillie We had a meeting of the Siddons club at Boyds last night Gen Dill resigned And Charlie Bell started to Columbus so we elected Fred Picard & Flint Rockhold. I hope you will give my little affair with Effie Hulse your attention as the "Gin" business is cut off and I will have to emegrate and do something. If you find she is in Dayton and got some wealth I will come over after you and we will stop in Dayton few days on our return "I mean business" [underlined "I.. .business"] Bell said he would come down and see me if I stayed in Springfield over Sunday. The Temperance excitement is still The rage but they are not accomplishing much at present and I think they have done all they can. They have closed up 3 saloons Kock Scwartz & Lance and I think they never can do anything with
