Description	These two 8" x 10" (20.32 x 25.4 cm) photographs of Ursuline Academy (now Ursuline College) show an empty classroom and a group of students outside the academy building. Aside from general courses in arithmetic, history, rhetoric, and science, students had the option of studying English, French, German, Italian, and Latin. The school maintained special departments in art and music. This early classroom view features both a harp and piano, instructional resources that were an integral part of the music curriculum. The classroom has a substantial book collection and accommodations for thirty-six students. The Cleveland Ursulines employed a teaching method set down in their Reglements, an educator's guide in use since at least 1652. The teaching order used the third edition of the Reglements, published by the Congregation of Paris in 1845, which commands teachers to have a clear and precise knowledge of the subject, explain the subject thoroughly but succinctly, guard against long and useless discussion, and enforce firm deadlines for completion of lessons.
