Description	This leather-bound book was submitted by Ursuline Academy (now Ursuline College) to the 1893 Columbian Exhibition. This volume contains 36 pencil studies of various subjects. A student artist is identified with each sketch. Topics include animals, flowers, and landscapes. Selections digitized here include drawings of a sheep and fox by Katherine Murray, vases by Gertrude Maloney, flowers by Anna Anderson, a harp by Genevieve Gallagher, and a well by Louise Forshner. The book is 36 pages and measures 14" x 11" (35.56 x 27.9 cm). The Chicago Columbian Exhibition celebrated the 400th anniversary of the discovery of the new world. It emphasized modern technological, commercial, and agricultural advances and highlighted art, education, and culture. Between May and October of 1893, more than 28 million visitors flocked to see the 65,000 exhibits located on 686 acres of Chicago's South Side. The Manufacturers and Liberal Arts Building alone had more than forty acres of exhibition space and contained a large section dedicated to education. At the urging of the archbishops, Catholic educators across the nation prepared and organized materials for the Exhibition. The completed exhibit was the largest (29,000 square feet) exhibit in its category and showcased a range of educational institutions supported by the Catholic Church--parish schools, colleges, training and normal schools, orphanages, kindergartens, and special institutions.
