Description	Anna Canavan received this certificate to commemorate her graduation from the commercial course at Ursuline College's Villa Angela in June of 1890. Her certificate, which measures 15" x 12" (38.1 x 30.48 cm), notes that she is "competent in the branches pertaining to that Course" and is "recommended to the consideration of the Business Community." She also received a gold medallion engraved with the words "truth" and "justice" to commemorate her achievements. The medallion is in a 2" x 2.5" (5.08 cm x 6.35 cm) velvet-lined case. Canavan did not marry and remained independent and self-supporting throughout her life. By 1878, both the Cleveland and Villa Angela locations of Ursuline College offered parallel programs. Students could enroll in the preparatory department to pursue a high school diploma or the collegiate department, which awarded the bachelor's degree. A training program for future teachers required students to pass a qualifying exam prior to graduation. The rigorous Bachelor of Arts curriculum included Greek, Latin, and English literature, as well as chemistry, physics and geography. The academic program also offered a scientific course, a school of fine arts, a domestic economy course, and a commercial course.
