Centaur
Lake

fountain
. A
centaur
is
a
creature
from
Greek
mythology
that
is
half
man
and
half
horse
. The
fowl
pond
appears
in the
fourth
photograph
. The
final
image
is
of
Canada
geese
near
the
deer
house
, a
two-story
Victorian
Gothic
building
. The
lower
floor
was the
deer
barn
and the
upper
floor
was
used
for
storage
and the
keeper's
quarters
.
It
was
moved
to the
zoo's
current
location
and
is
now
called
Wade
Hall
. In
1882
,
Cleveland
industrialist
Jeptha
Wade
(1811-1890)
, a
founder
of
Western
Union
Telegraph
Company
,
donated
seventy
acres
of
land
(now
known
as
Wade
Oval)
in
University
Circle
along
Doan
Brook
to the
city
of
Cleveland
for
use
as a
public
park
. The
city
purchased
additional
adjacent
land
to
create
Wade
Park
, the
city's
first
zoological
park
.
Wade
contributed
some
of the
zoo's
first
animals
,
white
tailed
deer
.
Construction
of an
art
museum
in
1905
prompted
the
city
to
find
a
new
home
for the
zoo
,
Brookside
Park
near
W
.
25th
Street
. The
move
from
Wade
Park
to
Brookside
Park
was a
gradual
one
that
took
nearly
a
decade
. In
1970
, the
Cleveland
Metropolitan
Park
District
assumed
responsibility
for
operating
the
zoo
. In
1975
the
name
of the
zoo
was
changed
from
Cleveland
Zoological
Park
to the
Cleveland
Metroparks
Zoo
.
