Description
This
bishop's
gold
cross
was
awarded
to
Harriet
Trossen
in
1938
for her
essay
, "The
Holy
Eucharist
, the
Hope
of
World
Peace
and
Unity.
" The
award
was
given
annually
to the
best
religious
essay
written
by a
senior
Notre
Dame
College
student
on an
assigned
topic
.
It
first
appears
in
college
annuals
in the
late
1920s
and
continued
into the
1940s
until
the
death
of
Bishop
Joseph
T
.
Schrembs
. At the
intersection
of the
two
arms
of the
cross
on the
reverse
is
the
personal
insignia
of
Bishop
Schrembs
. The
cross
measures
3
"
x
2
"
(7.62
x
5.08
cm)
, and the
chain
is
9
"
(22.86
cm)
long
.
Archbishop
Joseph
T
.
Schrembs
,
S.T.D.
, was
born
in
Bavaria
. He was a
Domestic
Prelate
of
Pope
Pius
X
, but
came
to
America
as a
missionary
. He
became
the
first
Bishop
in
Toledo
,
Ohio
in
1911
, and he then
became
the
bishop
of
Cleveland
in
1921
.
Schrembs
gave
the
Sisters
of
Notre
Dame
permission
to
establish
a
college
, and
became
the "
honorary
president
" of
Notre
Dame
College
. He
laid
the
cornerstone
, was a
frequent
visitor
to the
campus
, and
traditionally
celebrated
opening
Mass
for the
students
in
Christ
the
King
Chapel
. He
died
on
November
2
,
1945
.
Harriet
Trossen
received
a
four-year
scholarship
to
attend
Notre
Dame
College
. She was an
active
member
of the
class
of
1938
and
majored
in
economics
. She
received
her
J.D
.
degree
in
1944
from the
Cleveland
Law
School
.
Trossen
met
her
future
husband
(Robert
More)
there and
married
in
1948
. She
raised
three
children
, and
returned
to the
Notre
Dame
campus
in
1959
as a
part-time
assistant
to the
development
director
.
Trossen
expanded
the
development
office
, and
established
the
alumnae
affairs
office
,
becoming
the
first
alumnae
coordinator
. She also
established
offices
of
institutional
research
and
planning
to
implement
a
Title
III
grant
.
Trossen
helped
to
develop
a
social
services
program
that
brought
male
police
officers
to the
all-women
campus
in the
mid-1970s
to
obtain
associates
degree
in
sociology
. She
wrote
handbooks
for
faculty
and
staff
, and
served
as the
coordinator
for
grievances
and
sexual
harassment
. She and her
husband
also
taught
business
law
at the
college
, and she
gathered
and
arranged
historical
materials
for what would
become
the
Notre
Dame
College
Archives
(1989)
.
When
she
finally
retired
from
employment
at the
college
in
1984
, she
continued
on as an
active
member
of the
alumnae
association
and was
named
Woman
of the
Year
in
1989
.
Harriet
Trossen
More
died
in
2002
. The
Sisters
of
Notre
Dame
established
Notre
Dame
College
in
1922
in
Cleveland
,
Ohio
.
Founded
as a
private
,
Catholic
,
liberal
arts
college
for
women
,
Notre
Dame
College
opened
on
September
18
,
1922
on the
campus
of
Notre
Dame
Academy
on
Ansel
Road
. As the
college
grew
,
it
became
necessary
to
build
a
separate
campus
.
Land
east
of
Cleveland
in
South
Euclid
was
prepared
for the
new
college
site
, and the
first
building
opened
in
September
1928
.
