Description
These
two
photographs
show
exterior
and
interior
views
of the
side-wheel
packet
Thompson
Dean
,
which
was
built
at
Cincinnati
in
1872
.
Named
for
one
of the
boat's
owners
, the
Thompson
Dean
cost
$180,000
to
build
and
furnish
.
Considered
one
of the
finest
steamboats
of her
day
, she
received
a
gold
medal
at the
Cincinnati
Industrial
Exposition
.
During
the
winter
months
the
Thompson
Dean
ran
between
St
.
Louis
and
New
Orleans
,
while
the
rest
of the
year
she
traveled
between
Cincinnati
and
New
Orleans
. In
1882
the
Thompson
Dean's
cabin
and
engines
were
transferred
to a
new
hull
, and she
became
the
side-wheel
packet
Will
S
.
Hays
. The
first
photograph
of the
exterior
of the
boat
measures
9.41
x
6.61
inches
(23.9
x
16.78
cm)
, and the
second
photograph
of the
boat's
cabin
measures
5.51
x
6.72
inches
(13.99
x
17.06
cm)
. As
steamboats
replaced
flatboats
and
keelboats
as the
major
mode
of
river
transportation
,
travel
along
the
Ohio
River
became
faster
and
easier
. By the
middle
of the
nineteenth
century
,
more
than
3,000
steamboats
arrived
each
year
at the
port
of
Cincinnati
. The
city's
prominent
location
along
the
river
contributed
to its
rapid
growth
, and by
1850
Cincinnati
became
the
sixth
largest
city
in the
country
. The
development
of
railroads
slowly
led
to the
decline
of
steamboats
. They
continued
to
operate
on the
Ohio
River
, but their
numbers
dwindled
. This
photograph
is
only
a
sample
of the
approximately
8,000
images
collected
by
Captain
Frederick
Way
,
Jr
. of
scenes
along
the
Ohio
and
Mississippi
River
system
.
