Description	This 24-page brochure advertises Shillito's Department Store (later a part of Lazarus), in 1888. Titled "Uncle Simeon Goes Shopping" the humorous brochure views the store from the eyes of "Uncle Simeon" a fictional character from the country who has never been to a department store. The brochure is 8.5" x 10" (21.59 x 25.4 cm). John Shillito moved from Pennsylvania to Cincinnati in 1817 and worked as a clerk for Blanchly and Simpson. He bought the company in 1832 with William McLaughlin, and in 1837 established the John Shillito and Company. He built a four-story, 14,000 foot building to house his new store, considered "the most commodious dry goods store west of the Alleghenies." In 1857 Shillito built Cincinnati's first department store on Fourth Street. Still expanding, the company moved to Seventh and Race streets in 1878. Built by architect James McLaughlin, the store was modeled after Le Bon Marche department store in Paris, a six-story emporium in which all floors overlooked a domed central atrium. Shillito's quickly became one of Cincinnati's major attractions. In the twentieth century, Shillito's business slowed, and the store merged with F & R Lazarus and Company in 1930, which later became part of Federated Department Stores.
