Description	This item is a Boss Washing Machine No. 1, patented in 1891 by the Boss Washing Machine Company of Cincinnati. This model is marked "E.H. Huenefeld of Cincinnati", who may have been the storekeeper who sold the machine. The body and wooden portion of agitation mechanism are made of Louisiana cypress. The machine is operated by a hand-powered metal crank. It measures 32" tall x 36" long x 18.25" wide (81.28 x 91.44 x 45.72 cm). William Blackstone of Blufton, Indiana, built the first mechanized washing machine in 1874. Hundreds of firms patented different models of washing machines during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The earliest machines were made with wooden tubs, which were replaced with metal in the early twentieth century.
