Description
These
four
photographs
show
Stuyvesant
Hall
on the
Ohio
Wesleyan
University
campus
. The
first
two
photographs
document
the
exterior
of
building
. The
third
shows
a
patio
at the
back
of the
building
, and the
final
photograph
shows
the
bells
to be
mounted
in
carillon
. The
photographs
measure
4.5
"
x
7.75
"
(11.43
x
19.69
cm)
.
Stuyvesant
Hall
was
built
in
1930
on
West
William
Street
as a
women's
dormitory
with a
gift
from
Mr
. and
Mrs
.
Frank
Stuyvesant
of
Lakewood
,
Ohio
whose
interest
in
Ohio
Wesleyan
came
from their
neighbors
,
Mr
. and
Mrs
.
Erwin
G
.
Guthery
and
daughter
,
Katherine
Guthery
(graduate
of
1925)
.
Construction
was
proposed
in
1929
but the
death
of
John
Stuyvesant
in
February
1930
postponed
the
groundbreaking
a
few
months
.
Mrs
.
Stuyvesant
continued
with the
building
and
included
a
carillon
of
bells
in the
tower
in
memory
of her
husband
. A
patio
in the
rear
,
recreation
center
equipped
with a
stage
, and "
date
parlors
" were
special
features
of the
building
.
During
World
War
II
,
women
were
relocated
to
Austin
and
Monnett
Halls
as
well
as
fraternity
houses
to
make
room
for the
V-5
navy
men
on
campus
.
After
the
war
the
dormitory
again
housed
women
students
.
Stuyvesant
Hall
is
listed
on the
National
Register
of
Historic
Places
.
