Description	These three photographs show workers in the onion fields near McGuffey, Ohio, in the 1880s. The first two photographs, which measure 4.25" x 3.25" (10.8 x 8.26 cm) and 9.5" x 6.5" (24.13 x 16.61 cm), show entire families, even young children, working in the fields. The third 9.5" x 6.5" (24.13 x 16.61 cm) photograph shows Nathan "Nate" Dunson heading to town with a wagon load of onions. In the 1880s the Scioto Marsh was drained to create farmland for growing vegetables. Soon the land became known as "the onion capital of the world" due to the size and extent of the yield produced by the rich land. Workers on the land were often migrant farmers from Kentucky who lived year-round in unsanitary, unheated shacks.
