Description	This photograph of the business offices of Schumaker Milling Company, the predecessor of Quaker Oats, was taken around 1889. Also pictured is the home of founder Ferdinand Schumaker on Akron's luxurious East Market Street. Ferdinand Schumaker, an immigrant of Hanover, Germany, started the Schumaker Milling Company in Akron, Ohio. His oatmeal was given to soldiers during the Civil War because it was easy to store and ship and tasted better than the other foods soldiers received. After the war, veterans began asking Schumaker for oatmeal, and the business boomed. Schumaker built three mills in Akron. After a devastating fire in 1886, however, Schumaker was forced to join with his competitors in the American Cereal Company, which eventually became Quaker Oats. These photographs were published in George W. Kummer's Akron Illustrated in 1889. The book is approximately 60 pages and measures 10.38" x 13.75" (26.37 x 34.92 cm).
