Simeon
D
.
Fess
(1861-1936)
was
born
on a
farm
near
Harrod
in
Allen
County
,
Ohio
.
Fess
attended
Ohio
Northern
University
earning
a
bachelor's
degree
in
1889
and a
law
degree
in
1894
. He
served
as
vice
president
of the
university
from
1900-1902
. From
1906-1916
,
Fess
was
president
of the
struggling
Antioch
College
,
which
was
suffering
a
financial
crisis
. He
helped
to
increase
enrollment
in the
college
from
70
to
279
students
.
During
this
time
,
Fess
also
developed
his
political
career
,
being
elected
as a
Republican
to the
United
States
House
of
Representatives
from
Ohio
in
1913
and
serving
until
1923
. He
served
in the
United
States
Senate
from
1923
until
1935
.
