.
Sergeant
Fegley
of the
Marine
Corps
Women's
Reserve
christened
the
ship
. The
S.S
.
Bucyrus
Victory
was
launched
by the
Permanente
Metals
Corporation
. The
ship
was
named
after
the
town
of
Bucyrus
,
Ohio
and the
citizens
of
Bucyrus
donated
funds
to
equip
the
ship
with a
complete
library
,
athletic
equipment
, and
games
for the
crew
.
It
was
commissioned
by the
United
States
Navy
on
November
29
,
1944
under
the
command
of
Lieutenant
Commander
F
. A.
Geissert
. The
ship
arrived
at
Pearl
Harbor
on
January
3
,
1945
and
returned
to
San
Francisco
on
January
20
,
1945
after
rescuing
three
survivors
of an
airplane
crash
en
route
.
Between
April
3
,
1945
and
June
30
,
1945
the
S.S
.
Bucyrus
carried
supplies
to
assault
troops
on
Okinawa
and their
supporting
units
. The
ship
received
one
battle
star
for
service
in
World
War
II
.
It
was
decommissioned
for a
pre-inactivation
overhaul
February
24
,
1946
and
returned
to
service
April
24
,
1946
. The
S.S
.
Bucyrus
was
sold
for
scrap
in
1969
.
