Description	These two photographs show the original clock tower in Rocky River, Ohio. The tower was destroyed in a storm in 1956, as is shown in the third photograph. All three photographs measure 8" x 10" (20.32 x 25.4 cm). The clock tower has been a landmark in Rocky River since it was constructed in 1912. It was built at what was formerly on the boundary of the estate of U.S. Congressman Clifton B. Beach (1895-1899). When his heirs decided to subdivide his large estate, Alfred W. Smith was hired as developer. Smith designed and built the tower at what is now the intersection of Lake and Avalon streets. The tower did battle with birds and their nests, children using it as a playground and even robbers using it as a place to hide their loot, but it was tornado-like winds that blew it over on May 12, 1956. Rocky River went without its familiar landmark until a grassroots effort and support of the city led to its reconstruction in 1987.
